of Greater Philadelphia
and Southern New Jersey
Inspiring all girls to be strong, smart, and bold
In an effort to address the childhood literacy challenge in some of the United States’ most under resourced school districts, Girls Inc. has partnered with the Kellogg Foundation to launch a literacy initiative. Girls Inc. of Greater Philadelphia & Southern New Jersey (GIGPSNJ) was one of the 14 affiliates selected to receive a three year grant to partner with Philadelphia schools on an outreach basis to provide new books, engaging literacy activities and twice a week mentoring for girls in K-3rd grade.
Girls Inc.’s literacy initiative is designed to help increase literacy rates, testing scores and foster a lifelong love of reading for participants. Our literacy initiative is a welcomed addition at our two reading literacy sites which are Bergy Elementary and Heston Elementary, United Way targeted schools. Both of these schools are long-time partners of GIGPSNJ. In 2014, 130 girls at these schools participated in two of our other curriculum based academic enrichment programs, Girls Inc. Operation SMART® and Girls Inc. Economic Literacy®
We will continue to offer these programs during the school day at Bergy and Heston for students in grades 4-8. Given our long history and success of these two EITC qualified programs, our school partners were excited to add the literacy program for their youngest students. Our trained facilitators and literacy volunteers will work with these students to provide one-on-one reading support during the school day as well as after school.
